In the European Union, it is a fact that one in three women and girls (31%) has experienced physical or sexual violence in her lifetime, and over 800 women are killed every year by intimate partners or family members. This violence is not a distant problem; it affects our mothers, daughters, friends and colleagues. It is a fundamental violation of human rights that demands immediate and comprehensive action.
On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the Renew Europe Group calls on you to join our fight for a Europe where every woman and girls are safe, respected and free.
We are committed to push to end gender-based violence by demanding:
1. Gender-Based Violence as a European crime: We demand coordinated EU action and equal protection for all women under common European law.
2. Consent-Based Rape Laws: Rape laws across the entire EU must be based on consent, not on the need for survivors to prove force.
3. Action Against Cyber Violence: We must fight back against misogyny in online spaces, including deepfakes, online harassment, and the hateful "manosphere."
4. A Safer Europe (Online and Offline): Stronger prevention, enforcement, and education to stop sexual harassment and violence everywhere, from our homes and workplaces to our public streets and digital spaces.
5. Support for Survivors: Sustainable EU funding for the women's organisations and civil society groups that serve as our frontline responders.
6. Visibility and Data: Harmonised EU data on gender-based violence, including femicide, to reveal the full scale of this crisis.
