The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament welcomes the decision of EU ambassadors to support German financial regulator Verena Ross to become the next chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority.

MEP Luis Garicano (Ciudadanos, Spain), Vice-Chair of Renew Europe Group in charge of economic affairs, said:

“Congratulations Verena Ross on winning the ballot in the Council! I am looking forward to an easy confirmation by the European Parliament, after some months waiting and watching the Council playing petty political games with the lives of others''.

''The European Parliament push has succeeded and Verena Ross is the fourth consecutive woman, after Christine Lagarde at the ECB, Petra Hielkema at EIOPA, and Natasha Cazenave also at the ESMA, to be appointed to the top jobs in European financial regulators and supervisors”, added Garicano.

The Paris-based European Securities and Markets Authority has been without a chair since March, due to a political standoff in the Council of the European Union. ESMA sets the EU’s trading standards on shares, bonds, derivatives and commodities, and it plays a key role overseeing multitrillion-euros clearinghouses.
