The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament calls on the EU to lead and launch a global campaign to reduce the number of children held in places of detention, together with the need to develop and maintain an international database on children deprived of liberty.

In a report on the situation of children deprived of liberty in the world, today adopted by the plenary, our political group deplored the detention of children and calls on the international community to redouble efforts to end it by 2030.

The EU also must adopt a list of priority countries in which the European External Action Service, the Commission and the Member States would step up their action in support of children deprived of liberty.

Renew Europe MEP, Soraya Rodríguez Ramos (Ciudadanos, Spain), EP rapporteur on this file, said:

“Today, we have adopted in plenary by a large majority this report where we call on the international community to commit itself to eradicating the systematic deprivation of children in the world. We, at the European Parliament, hold a message for the children of the world: your life, your childhood and your freedom matter and the European Union will work to ensure that they always prevail.”
