The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament warmly congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney, leader of Renew Europe’s sister Party, the Liberal Party of Canada, on his victory in the Canadian federal elections, marking a pivotal moment for Canada and EU-Canada relations, opening a new chapter for strengthened cooperation.
In a letter sent today, Renew Europe’s President Valérie Hayer praised Mr Carney’s leadership and the trust placed in him by Canadians as a powerful affirmation of liberal democratic values.
"Mark Carney’s victory demonstrates that openness, innovation, democracy, and a rules-based international order continue to offer a compelling vision for the future. This election result shows there is scope for deeper EU-Canada relations. The Liberals and Democrat family must be at the heart of efforts to build a new global alliance of democracies." said Valérie Hayer.
The letter welcomes Mr Carney’s commitment to strengthening Canada's ties with reliable allies, particularly the European Union. Renew Europe highlighted the importance of deepening economic, political, and strategic cooperation. It also noted the growing positive perceptions of the EU among Canadians as a strong foundation for deeper relations.
Renew Europe particularly welcomes reports of enhanced military-industrial cooperation between the EU and Canada, underlining the need to reinforce democratic resilience, security, and strategic autonomy in a changing world.
MEP Stéphanie Yon-Courtin and MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, both Members of the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with Canada, welcomed the election result and called for enhanced dialogue with Canada:
"With growing geopolitical uncertainty and a shifting transatlantic balance, the EU must seize the opportunity to deepen its partnership with Canada. Strengthening ties with a reliable, like-minded partner like Canada is not just desirable, it is strategic necessity. Our shared values and common interests must translate into deeper cooperation across all areas" said MEP Stéphanie Yon-Courtin, former chair of the Parliament’s delegation with Canada.
Looking to the future, Renew Europe expressed its desire to work closely with Mr Carney’s government in areas such as clean technology and climate innovation, digital standards and AI governance, strategic trade resilience, and the defence of democratic institutions.
"Canada and the European Union are natural allies in defending democracy, prosperity and the rule of law. We want to work hand in hand with Prime Minister Carney’s government to build a transatlantic partnership that is fit for the future and delivers for all our citizens." said MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú.
