The Renew Europe Group firmly stands by Romania’s European future as it faces a crucial second round of presidential elections on May 18th. Romanians are called upon to decide whether their country will continue to advance as a strong European democracy or risk sliding backward under the weight of populism and authoritarian temptations.
The Renew Europe Group therefore endorses Nicușor Dan, current mayor of Bucharest, the pro-European candidate, who faces a populist and extremist opponent.
Valérie Hayer MEP, President of Renew Europe, stated:
“This is a moment for unity around shared European values. Renew Europe supports Nicușor Dan and its Romanian member party, USR, which threw its weight behind him in the presidential race."
Renew Europe calls on the S&D Group in the European Parliament to convey the same message to their Romanian member party, PSD, the only pro-European party in Romania that did not yet officially support Nicușor Dan.
Dan Barna MEP, Vice President of Renew Europe, emphasised:
“European values are not optional — they are the very foundation of our Union and the only candidate able to deliver on these is Nicușor Dan. An extremist candidate like George Simion poses a serious security threat not only to Romania, but to Moldova, Ukraine and the entire European Union”.
Mr. Barna continued:
“I call on all those who want a bright, European future for Romania to unite. My message goes out especially to the Romanian diaspora, hard working men and women, who are a great contribution to European society and still support families back home. This system of peace and prosperity we enjoy today can only last when we step up and do the right thing”. |
