Ahead of Denmark’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Valérie Hayer, President of the Renew Europe Group, will travel to Copenhagen on Tuesday, together with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, for official meetings. She will present a liberal and democratic vision for a Europe that is more secure, competitive, and united in its values. President Hayer will meet with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the Speaker of the Danish Parliament, Søren Gade, members of the Folketinget, where Hayer will call for bold leadership on the EU’s next budget, the defence of the rule of law, and Europe’s strategic autonomy.
Renew Europe President Valérie Hayer: "Europe is being tested economically, geopolitically, and democratically. The Danish Presidency must deliver a democratic response to a growing reactionary trend: by defending our freedoms, growing our economy, and standing firm on our values. As liberals and democrats, we believe Europe must act with courage, from a new investment deal to military mobility. Citizens expect performance, protection, and purpose and Renew Europe is here to deliver".
In Copenhague, President Valérie Hayer will outline Renew Europe’s priorities. Among others, she will emphasise the need for a resilient and competitive economy, advocating for a strategic and modern Multiannual Financial Framework beyond 2027. Renew Europe President Valérie Hayer: "Europe must equip itself for the future. Renew Europe is committed to building a resilient and competitive economy through a strategic, forward-looking MFF, anchored in new own resources by 2028. We also call for a renewed mandate for the European Investment Bank to unlock financing for green innovation, bolster our defence capabilities, and invest in critical infrastructure. These are the building blocks of a stronger, sovereign Europe.”
On migration, the urgency of a swift implementation of the Asylum and Migration Pact and especially the importance of the Return Directive will be addressed. Renew Europe's President Hayer underlines:
"The swift implementation of the Asylum and Migration Pact is not just urgent — it is essential. A fair and balanced migration and asylum policy must include an effective Return Directive, while also opening legal and labour migration pathways to respond to Europe’s demographic realities and workforce needs. Renew Europe stands for a humane, realistic, and forward-looking approach".
On the rule of law, President Hayer will insist that no EU funds be disbursed to Hungary until full compliance with EU law is restored. She will urge the resumption of Article 7 TEU hearings with clear deadlines and meaningful consequences, while promoting a smart conditionality mechanism to ensure that EU funds reach municipalities, civil society, and citizens in sanctioned Member States directly.
In Copenhagen, Renew Europe's President will underline the steadfast and unwavering support of Ukraine as one of the biggest priorities of Renew Europe, i.e. the finalisation of the European Defence Industry Programme, and the adoption of legislation on military mobility and the confiscation of frozen Russian assets. Hayer will also call for deeper defence cooperation, including a dedicated Council of Defence Ministers.
This visit marks a key moment ahead of the Danish EU Council Presidency. Renew Europe stands ready to contribute to deliver an ambitious, democratic, and effective European Union. |
