Renew Europe has welcomed today’s vote in the European Parliament endorsing Bulgaria’s accession to the eurozone, describing it as a historic and transformative moment. The decision clears the way for Bulgaria to adopt the euro as its official currency on 1 January 2026, becoming the 21st member of the euro area.
MEP Nikola Minchev (We continue the change) commented: "This is a symbolic day for Bulgaria. Eurozone membership carries both political and economic weight. It offers a major opportunity, and it is our responsibility to make the most of it."
Renew Europe commends Bulgaria for meeting the convergence criteria and supports this step towards full integration. Bulgaria’s readiness to adopt the euro reflects the EU’s continued cohesion and the euro’s role as a symbol of stability and unity. Having made substantial progress towards economic convergence, Bulgaria is well-positioned to join the monetary union.
MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk (Movement for Rights and Freedoms) said: "I am confident that Bulgaria’s successful accession to the eurozone will open new prospects and further embed the country at the heart of the European Union."
The move is expected to bring greater macroeconomic stability, enhance investor confidence, and facilitate trade, travel, and business within the euro area. It also offers protection from currency fluctuations. Bulgaria’s accession is a clear signal of its commitment to the core values of the European Union-democracy, transparency, and the rule of law.
Joining the euro is not just an economic step, it reflects shared responsibilities and mutual trust. MEP Hristo Petrov (We continue the change) summarised widely shared sentiments among Bulgarians: "Every Bulgarian at some point has thought: ‘That’s it, I’m leaving.’ And where do they go? To the eurozone."
Renew Europe congratulates the Bulgarian people and institutions for their sustained commitment to fiscal discipline, reforms and european values. |
