One year draghi report landscape 1

Today, Renew Europe held a seminar to take stock of the progress made on the Draghi report since its adoption almost a year ago, on 9 September 2024. The key question put to the panelists was: one year on, what have we actually achieved? The answer: not enough.

Researchers from the European Policy Innovation Council unveiled the first science-based tracking method for the 383 proposals made by Draghi. Their assessment showed that only one in ten recommendations has been implemented so far — an implementation rate of just 11.2%.

Reacting to these figures, João Cotrim de Figueiredo, MEP from Iniciativa Liberal (Portugal) and vice-president of Renew Europe, said:
“Mario Draghi spoke of an ‘existential threat’ in the foreword of his report — and this is coming from a central banker who is used to weighing his words carefully. Faced with an existential threat, you need to act quickly. One year after the adoption of the report, we are still lacking a sense of urgency. Renew Europe wants to keep the momentum going. Dragging on Draghi is dangerous.”

Looking at the broader geopolitical context, João Cotrim de Figueiredo also stressed that implementing Draghi’s recommendations is our only chance to become a real player: “We can lament the Trumps and Putins of this world, but there is little we can do about them. What we can influence is our own reform agenda. If we get fitter, we’ll get stronger — we’ll become players.”

During the event, João Cotrim de Figueiredo also presented the “Simplometer”, an AI-based tool developed with his Iniciativa Liberal team in Brussels. The tool analyses and simplifies EU legislation, which he vowed to use and offered to share with other EU lawmakers.
