Renew Europe condemns the incursion of Russian drones into the sovereign territory of Poland overnight, putting the lives of EU citizens at risk. This reckless provocation marks a dangerous new phase in Russia’s escalation.

European liberals and democrats stand in full solidarity with the Polish and Ukrainian people. We renew our call for the creation of a genuine European Defence Union, capable of independently deterring adversaries and protecting our citizens, including a European sky shield initiative. This is an urgent, shared mission that requires unwavering European unity.

Renew MEP Michał Kobosko (Polska 2050, Poland) said: “Just a few hours ago, Russia repeatedly violated Polish airspace and put the lives of EU citizens at risk, which is completely unacceptable. Europe must be able to defend itself from the aggressor. This means action now to ensure a credible European deterrence. Russia only respects strength, and so their provocations cannot go unanswered. Europe, wake up before it is too late.”

Looking ahead, Renew Europe will continue to press for concrete steps towards strategic sovereignty: stronger defence cooperation, joint investments, and a readiness plan that equips Europe to meet any threat. Only a united, determined Europe can guarantee peace and security for its citizens.

Renew MEP Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP, Germany), Chair of the Committee on Security and Defence, added : "For weeks, Russian drones have been repeatedly flying over NATO territory. But the fact that more than 20 drones are now penetrating more than 100 kilometres deep into Polish territory is a new level of escalation in Putin's war logic. In military terms, this does not have to upset us. But NATO must not hesitate now. Just as Dutch fighter jets, among others, intercepted drones last night, the alliance as a whole must now react decisively. Otherwise, those countries that border Russia in particular will lose their trust in the alliance - and this is precisely what Putin is speculating on."
