Gaza tragedy : no more excuses !

In a shift in posture, in response to the extreme human suffering witnessed in the region, the European Parliament today adopted a comprehensive resolution on Gaza.
Renew Europe took its responsibilities and deployed all efforts to build a majority around urgent action to end both the humanitarian crisis and the famine caused by the Israeli government and to achieve a permanent ceasefire.
The group particularly welcomes Commission President von der Leyen's long-awaited declaration supporting a partial suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement's trade pillar.
Renew Europe's key demands includes in the resolution encompass immediate humanitarian measures through opening all border crossings and large-scale provision of food, medical care, and psychosocial support for children. The resolution also calls for full restoration of UNRWA mandate and funding with strong oversight.
We also insist that Hamas must be excluded from any role in the future of Gaza.
On accountability, the resolution demands enhanced sanctions against Hamas terrorist organization and targeted sanctions against Israeli ministers Ben-Gvir and Smotrich for inciting crimes.
"With today's vote, the European Parliament sends a clear message to Council and Commission: 'No more excuses. It is time to act,'" said Hilde Vautmans (Open-VLD, Belgium), Renew coordinator for foreign affairs. "The Gaza resolution lays down a common European position: condemning terrorism, demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire, insisting on the release of all hostages, and calling for urgent humanitarian access to save lives in Gaza. The resolution is a call to action. We must now ensure that aid reaches every person in need, that all parties respect international law, that sanctions are applied against both Hamas and extremist Israeli ministers, and that we begin the process towards a two-state solution by recognizing the State of Palestine—once all hostages are released and with the clear demand that Hamas have no role in the future of Gaza. The ultimate goal still is two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security."
