Today, the European Parliament adopted a report by Renew MEP Anna-Maja Henriksson on streamlining EU internal market rules. The report will help maintain the Draghi momentum for a stronger single market.
Anna-Maja Henriksson explains: “Important reports have been written recently. They contain a host of tangible proposals. Draghi’s focuses on boosting competitiveness. Letta’s on fixing the single market. Finland’s former President Sauli Niinistö argues in favour of a preparedness union and highlights the need to simplify a number of rules to strengthen Europe’s security. With my report, the European Parliament is now doing its part. Good ideas and clever proposals must be turned into actions—now.”
The Henriksson report calls for:
- Streamlined rules
- Better implementation and robust enforcement for a predictable and competitive business environment
- Unlocking the full potential of the single market
- Embracing digitalisation and artificial intelligence for growth and governance
- Improving consumer protection in the digital age
Anna-Maja Henriksson concludes: “Strengthening the single market is the only way to boost the EU’s competitiveness and global influence. Take the EU-US deal: we are horrified to be hit with a 15% tariff. But the International Monetary Fund has estimated that internal market barriers in the EU are equivalent to a 45% tariff on manufacturing and a 110% tariff on services. If we take down those barriers, we’ll be richer, stronger, more prosperous and more influential.”
