Ahead of this weekend’s pivotal elections in Moldova, Renew Europe condemns ongoing attempts by Russia to interfere in the election and reaffirms its unwavering support for the country’s democratic path and its European future. Moldova has shown extraordinary resilience in the face of growing Russian interference and hybrid attacks aimed at undermining democratic institutions and destabilising society.
The people of the Republic of Moldova deserve the freedom to choose their own future, free from external coercion and manipulation. Renew Europe calls on liberals, democrats and centrists across Europe to encourage Moldovans to vote and defend their democracy.
Valérie Hayer (Renaissance, France), President of the Renew Europe Group, said:
"Moldova’s future lies in a strong and united European Union. We stand with all Moldovans defending their democracy. Russian attempts to interfere in Moldova’s democracy is reprehensible and must have consequences. We urge Moldova’s citizens, at home and abroad, to make their voices heard and to choose a European path of freedom and democracy."
Dan Barna (USR, Romania), Vice President of the Renew Europe Group, and Renew Europe shadow rapporteur on the Republic of Moldova, added:
"The Kremlin's brazen campaign of disinformation, cyber-attacks, and illicit financing to subvert Moldova's upcoming elections is an attack on democracy itself. We condemn these hybrid tactics in the strongest terms. The EU must bolster Moldova’s resilience and ensure the integrity of its vote.
To all Moldovan citizens, especially the diaspora: the most powerful response is your ballot. Go out and vote! Your future is European, don't let anyone else decide it for you."
Dan Barna will monitor the election on the ground as a member of the OSCE observation mission.
Renew Europe will continue to support Moldova’s reform process, its sovereignty, and its rightful place within the European family of nations.
