Lead the world or fall behind: Renew Europe urges ministers to seal ambitious 2040 deal

Ahead of today’s critical meeting of EU environment ministers, European Liberals and Democrats (Renew Europe Group) urge all Member States to show courage, unity and leadership by agreeing on a science-based 2040 climate target and a strong EU position for COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

Renew Europe reiterates its call for a binding 90 percent greenhouse-gas reduction target by 2040, in line with the European Climate Law and the recommendations of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change.

Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy MEP (Netherlands, D66), Renew Europe vice-president and shadow rapporteur on the Climate Law proposal, said:

“Europe’s leadership is on the line. Climate action is our greatest opportunity to strengthen competitiveness, cut energy costs and build a resilient, independent economy. The Draghi report made clear that Europe’s prosperity depends on investing in the industries of the future, not defending the past. A bold 2040 target is how we get there.”

Emma Wiesner MEP (Sweden, Centerpartiet), Renew Europe’s shadow rapporteur on the recently adopted European Parliament’s COP30 resolution, added:

“The world is watching Europe. The decision of environment ministers will show whether we remain the driving force behind the Paris Agreement or fall behind. Ministers must act with courage and science on their side; this is about safety from climate disasters, clean, affordable energy for families, jobs in future industries, energy security that frees us from imported Russian fuel. We need to build the economy of the future and move on from the fossil-fuelled economies of the past.”

Renew Europe remains committed to building a strong, pro-European alliance to deliver a binding 90 percent cut by 2040, keeping 1.5 °C within reach, strengthening Europe’s energy independence, and delivering lower energy costs and secure, sustainable prosperity for future generations.
