Preparation of the European Council meeting - In light of the ongoing ‘peace’ negotiations between the US, Russia and Ukraine, and the recent publication of a new US national security strategy, Renew Europe requested that the planned debate on the upcoming EUCO should be adapted to include a debate on support for Ukraine, transatlantic relations and the EU’s strategic autonomy.

Leaders must take clear decisions on Russian frozen assets, European strategic autonomy, and security guarantees for Ukraine. Ukraine's security remains interlinked with all Europeans' security, requiring Europe to step up financially, diplomatically, and with massive military aid increases. We are deeply concerned by the US National Security Strategy attacking the EU and liberal democracy. No foreign government should influence or manipulate our democracies and lawmaking processes.

Debate : Wednesday 17 December, 9:00

Renew MEP : Group President Valérie Hayer (Renaissance, France)

Breaking the Russian gas grip on Europe - Renew Europe played a decisive role in securing a historic agreement that advances the final end date for Russian LNG long term contracts to 1 January 2027 and the final end date for Russian pipeline gas to 30 September 2027.

This is a major achievement for European security and cuts a critical source of financing for Putin’s war.

The new regulation strengthens Europe’s resilience by introducing penalties for companies that violate the rules and by requiring every Member State to present a plan for diversifying its energy supply.

The commitment to phase out of Russian oil no later than the end of 2027 is a vital next step toward full energy independence from Russia.

Debate : Tuesday 16 December, 9:00. Vote : Wednesday 17 December, 12:00.

Renew MEPs : Katri Kulmuni (Suomen Keskusta, Finland), shadow rapporteur for ITRE & Ľubica Karvašová (Progressive Slovakia, Slovakia), shadow rapporteur for INTA

Vote on the resolution "My Voice, My Choice: for safe and accessible abortion" & hybrid press conference in Strasbourg - The European Parliament will vote on Thursday, 18 December on its position on the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) My Voice, My Choice, supported by 1.2 million signatures across 19 Member States.
If adopted, the resolution will underline the scale of the citizens’ mobilisation and call on the European Commission for the creation of a voluntary EU mechanism that would allow participating Member States to provide abortion care to people who cannot access it in their home country. The vote takes place at a time when access to abortion still varies widely across Europe, with an estimated 20 million women unable to obtain safe and legal abortion care.

On the same day as the vote, the Renew rapporteur, shadows and the organisers of My Voice, My Choice will hold a joint hybrid press conference to present the resolution, respond to the citizens’ initiative, and outline the next steps ahead of the European Commission’s formal response in March 2025.

Vote: December 17, 12:00
