Renew Europe welcomes the signing of the EU-Mercosur partnership agreement
Renew Europe MEPs have today commented on the signature of the EU-Mercosur Partnership (EMPA) and the Interim Trade Agreement (ITA), a significant step in Europe’s trade and geopolitical engagement with Latin America.
Svenja Hahn MEP (FDP, Germany), Renew Europe shadow rapporteur in the International Trade Committee (INTA), said:

“At a time when trade is increasingly weaponised, the EU is strengthening its economic sovereignty through fair partnerships like Mercosur. The agreement reduces strategic dependencies, secures access to critical raw materials, and safeguards Europe’s prosperity and jobs.”

Urmas Paet (Eesti Reformierakond, Estonia), Renew Europe shadow rapporteur in the Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET) added :

“At a time when the world politics is in constant turmoil, the EU-Mercosur partnership and trade agreement is a crucial and positive development for Europe. This deal took 25 years, which is too long but I am glad that we finally reached an agreement. Europe needs partners all over the world in order to remain a significant actor on the global stage. A stronger partnership with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay is thus of essence.”

As the ratification process advances, Renew Europe calls for an inclusive, transparent debate, focusing on the strategic, geo-political, economic and environmental dimensions of the agreement.
Renew Europe also reiterates that there shall be no provisional application of the agreement before the European Parliament has given its consent.
Renew Europe underlines that Mercosur partners must respect any adopted EU safeguard measures for sensitive agricultural sectors and engage in good faith throughout implementation. The EU’s commitment to support farmers and agricultural sectors can only be proved by the coherence between the ambition of an efficient Common Agricultural Policy and a level-playing field regarding standards and controls.
