Elections Moldova landscape

Renew Europe warmly welcomes the decisive victory of President Maia Sandu's PAS party in Moldova's legislative elections, securing an absolute majority in a vote that reaffirms the country's European path.

This result sends a powerful message: the rise of illiberal forces subject to foreign interference is not inevitable. When citizens mobilize, these forces can be pushed back. The Moldovan people have demonstrated remarkable resilience against unprecedented Russian interference, including massive vote-buying operations, artificial intelligence manipulation, disinformation campaigns through social media platforms, and intimidation tactics such as bomb threats at polling stations and diplomatic missions.

Moldovan democracy has prevailed. The choice was clear: the path toward European Union accession or the risk of falling into Russia's orbit. Moldovans have reaffirmed their European future with strength and determination.

Member of the OSCE election observation mission in Moldova, Dan Barna (USR, Romania), Vice President of the Renew Europe Group, and Renew Europe shadow rapporteur on the Republic of Moldova said : “Moldova is an example for us all. Citizens defeated a furious attack not with weapons, but with democracy, showing all of Europe the true power of the European dream. There is nothing more patriotic than a people who decide their own future in spite of a dictator's imperialist dreams. And the EU needs to deliver on its promise.”

Now the responsibility shifts to the European Union. We must stand firmly alongside Moldova, supporting efforts to strengthen its democratic institutions and accelerate economic development. Renew Europe will spare no effort to continue supporting Moldova throughout its accession journey.
