Liberals and democrats deliver big win for Europeans: key funding secured for EU flagship projects in 2026 budget

We are proud to announce that liberals and democrats have secured additional 267.3 million euro in next year’s EU budget, which means substantial funding increases for vital sectors such as research, sustainable innovation, health, and defence.

The achievements are reflected across several flagship programmes, including Erasmus+, Horizon Europe, LIFE, the Union Civil Protection Mechanism, Connecting Europe Facility and EU4Health, as well as humanitarian aid.

The deal struck this night on the EU budget for 2026 between the Parliament and Council is essential and Renew Europe have throughout the negotiations played a decisive role in ensuring that next year's budget will empower Europe’s competitiveness, innovation, and resilience in challenging times.

Renew Europe’s lead negotiating MEP on the general budget, Stine Bosse, (Moderaterne/Denmark), says:

“I am happy and proud of Renew Europe's crucial and important work in bridging the Parliament and in the end leaving a clear mark on Budget26’.

In uncertain times, when Europe faces mounting pressure from global competitors like the United States and China, as well as challenges from migration, climate change and war on our borders, it is vital that we stand united with a budget that strengthens Europe’s competitiveness and strategic autonomy through a strong liberal prioritization of green energy, defence, health, sustainable innovation and protection of our external borders."

The Group’s lead negotiating MEP on the part of the budget related to the EU-institutions, Fabienne Keller, (Renaissance/France), says:

Thanks to our group tenacity, we managed to obtain additional posts for institutions whose mandate have been extended, notably for the European Court of Justice, which was a Renew priority in order to ensure the protection of the rule of law! In addition to which we secured further funds in order to strengthen cybersecurity. A strong Europe is a safe Europe.
