Critical Medicines Act: end of critical medicine shortages, once and for all

Liberals and Democrats welcome the final agreement and long-awaited Critical Medicines Act regulation. This landmark deal delivers on priorities we have long fought for - ending the supply gap of life-saving medicines and addressing a strategic vulnerability of the EU. Securing the supply of essential medicines to all citizens, strategic investments and support to boost EU-based pharmaceutical manufacturing, including for orphan products, and collaborative public procurement that gives Member States collective bargaining power for better prices and supply- this will transform the lives of patients across Europe.
The binding legislation will reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, enhance EU strategic autonomy in medicines manufacturing in a challenging global context and will ensure availability of critical medicines across the EU. Vlad Voiculescu, Renew Europe shadow rapporteur and coordinator of the Public Health Committee (SANT) said:

“This agreement is a historic step towards making sure Europeans can access the medicines they need, when they need them. We have learned from recent crises that no Member State can face shortages alone. By strengthening cooperation, and supporting production in Europe, we are building a stronger and more secure European Health Union for all citizens.”

The legislation is a strategic step towards a more resilient European Health Union and a matter of economic security. Renew Europe has continuously worked to ensure long-term resilience, preparedness, and fair and equal access to all Europeans.
