Today’s decision of the Foreign affairs council to open the first accession negotiations cluster for Ukraine and Moldova is a historic moment. Liberals and democrats celebrate this decision and it reconfirms our position: Enlargement is a strategic necessity for Europe. Ukraine and Moldova have demonstrated their commitment to the EU through significant reform efforts, and today they finally enter the formal negotiation phase.

Liberals and democrats congratulate both countries for this milestone, which comes four years since the Council granted Ukraine and Moldova candidate status.

“Today marks the first step in the EU’s fulfilment of its promise towards Moldova. A brave country with brave people that showed us time and time again how Russia’s hybrid tactics can be successfully repelled deserves full membership and fast. While Moldova consistently ranks among the frontrunners of reforms, even frontrunners need to have their hard work recognised.”

Dan Barna
Renew Europe MEP, Romania, Uniunea Salvați România

Renew Europe have consistently supported Ukraine since the start of Russia’s illegal war of aggression and reaffirms solidarity with the Ukrainian people,  supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders and their EU path.

Moldova's trajectory has been no less remarkable, and we have continuously commended its continued exemplary commitment to the EU accession process – this year Moldova made the greatest annual progress among candidate countries, despite significant internal and external challenges, including persistent hostile Russian interference.

Liberals and Democrats strongly support the progress made and see EU enlargement as a strategic investment in peace, security, democracy, and prosperity across the continent.
