The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament has today given its full support to the resolution drafted by the Parliament’s Brexit Steering Group addressing the ongoing Article 50 negotiations.

The resolution re-affirms the position of the European Parliament taken in its last mandate on a number of issues, from support for reform of the UK’s “settled status” scheme for EU27 nationals in the UK, to solidarity with the people of Ireland and the need to defend the Irish peace process.

The Parliament indicates that it would support an extension of the period provided for in Article 50 if there are reasons and a purpose for such an extension, so long as the work and functioning of the EU institutions are not adversely affected.

The Parliament’s resolution also highlights the UK Government’s decision to shut down the UK Parliament and calls on the UK Government to come forward with operational written proposals outlining their alternative arrangements for a safety net to secure an open border on the island of Ireland. MEPs note that should the UK withdraw from the EU without an agreement, this would be entirely the responsibility of the UK Government.

The President of the Renew Europe Group, Dacian Cioloș MEP and the European Parliament’s Brexit Coordinator, Guy Verhofstadt MEP today commented on the ongoing Brexit negotiations:

Dacian Cioloș MEP, President of the Renew Europe Group, commented;

“The closing down of the British Parliament is an affront to democracy. I am sure that if this had happened in an eastern or central European country, we would today be debating here the initiation of an article 7 procedure addressing the breach of the rule of law.”

“Many say that the EU wants Britain out of the Union. I can never agree to this. I will never stop believing that Britain's rightful place is at the heart of the European project, not on the side-lines.”

“Today we are faced with three options for any Brexit; the best is to agree on the Withdrawal agreement, as the least disruptive way out and laying best foundation for close future relationship. A no deal exit would be a disaster for all, the EU and UK. A new extension, for me, can only be delivered if there is a clear purpose.”

“On Ireland, we must remember we are defending a peace process above all else. Our determination to stand with the people of Ireland and Northern Ireland is absolute. You have our solidarity.“

“Above all, we now have to end the uncertainty. People who used their EU citizenship should not now be punished for the choices of extremist politicians. We should altogether move forward to deliver the Europe we need with a clarified relationship with the U.K.”

Guy Verhofstadt MEP, Brexit Coordinator for the European Parliament, speaking today in the debate said:

“The British Parliament may be shut down, the European Parliament is not! So next time the Eurosceptics here want to make a ridiculous comparison with the Soviet Union, from now on they can point their finger to Westminster, instead of Strasbourg or Brussels.”

“Brexit is a very bad idea, but had at least one positive effect: making the European project popular again in the 27 other countries, and even in Britain, as nearly 40 of the elected 73 British MEPs are Remainers.”

“The British government must implement an automatic registration of our EU citizens living there. Instead of playing the angry Hulk, he should be more inspired by another character, the caring nanny, Mrs. Doubtfire.”

“The European Parliament will never accept the UK can have all the advantage of free trade, and not aligning with our ecological, health & social standards. We are not stupid! We will not kill our own companies, economy, single market. We will never accept ‘Singapore by the North Sea’!”

“We all know Mr Cameron wanted to use Brexit to solve a division in the Conservative party. His little adventure ended with huge divisions in British society. Be sure of one thing: we will never let Brexit divide Europe and the European project.”
