Ukraine Nato landscape

The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament calls on the EU Member States to speed up the processes related to the support the EU is providing to Ukraine and be ready to engage more when it comes to delivering military assistance to Kyiv.

During today’s plenary debate on the conclusions of the European Council meeting of 29-30 June 2023, our political group also insisted on the important role Ukraine is playing in keeping our continent safe, but to guarantee the security and stability in Europe, Ukraine must win the war and become a NATO member as soon as the situation will allow it.

Renew Europe MEP, Nathalie Loiseau (Horizons, France), Chair of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence, said:

"Ukraine is our ally, the most valiant and hardened army in Europe. Ukraine will join NATO, it's just a question of when, not a question of principle, what matters is what we do. We are supporting Ukraine by training Ukrainian soldiers and supplying military equipment. This week we have adopted the third part of the munitions plan and that the ceiling of the European Peace Facility has been raised and it is very much welcome. But I urge us to do much more and much more quickly. We have an interest in Ukraine's victory and its entry into NATO, because these are the only solid guarantees of stability in Europe."

MEP Hilde Vautmans (Open Vld, Belgium), Renew Europe Group’s coordinator in the Foreign Affairs Committee, added:

''Europe must keep reminding itself: Ukraine cannot lose this war! Where would Putin stop if he wins in Ukraine? The most important thing is that we give Ukraine whatever it needs so that it can win this war. Yes, we are slowly moving into the right direction. But with war on our European continent, we need to make giant steps! And I will keep repeating that this must lead to a credible European army."
